A brief history of Postcards

The world’s first postcard was issued in Austria in 1869. It was a simple design with a plain back and it was not until 1894 that regulations came into effect in Britain and Ireland allowing for a picture postcard to be used. At that time only the address was to be written on one side of the card and the picture and any message were to be on the other. The ‘divided back’ era began in 1902, but only applied to inland post at first. Gradually this evolved to include postcards for other destinations as well. So began what is referred to as the golden age of the pictorial postcard and this was to last until about 1914.

Postcard collecting boomed during this period and practically every home possessed a postcard album. Publishers encouraged the popular pastime by producing numbered series and themed collections. They became the standard medium for transmitting short messages – today’s emails! They were cheap and reliable with up to seven postal deliveries a day. Millions of postcards were posted every week and many of these ended up in an album, to be rediscovered years later.
